How to Redo a Dresser for a Baby Room

When you have a baby on the way, the new purchases add up quickly. Before you know it, you could be spending a few hundred or even thousand on items before the baby even gets here. Spend less by refurbishing or repurposing furntiure. If you have an older dresser, customize it to fit in with your nursery theme and spend significantly less than a new dresser. Take the dresser into an open area, such as a garage, to allow fumes to escape. It's dangerous to stain or paint in the baby's room because the fumes may linger and cause respiratory difficulties for the baby.

Sand the dresser down using fine-grit sandpaper going in the direction of the wood grain. Sand it enough to remove all old paint or stain and make the edges and surfaces smooth.

Wipe down the dresser completely to clean any remaining dust off.

Use a paint brush to apply water-based stain or water-based paint, which are greener alternatives and generally considered "safer" than oil-based paints. Try the color on the back or bottom of the dresser, and allow it to dry completely to check the desired color before completing the entire dresser.

Lengthen the lifespan of the paint or stain by applying a clear coat after the stain or paint has had adequate time to dry.

Customize the dresser more for your baby by painting his name on the top or one of the drawers. Or get stickers that fit in with your nursery theme and stick them on the sides of the dresser. A color that works regardless of sex is white.
