How to Correctly Set a Dinner Table

A proper place setting on your dinner table shows guests that you are a knowledgeable hostess. To properly set the table, you will need a number of setting pieces, and, of course, you'll need to know how to place them correctly. Make sure you have all the amenities necessary, then take your time arranging the table. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Place the service plate, or dinner plate, in front of each chair at the table. Set the soup bowl on top of the plate.

    2

Place the knives and spoon to the right of the plate in the correct order. The service knife should be closest, with the ridged edge pointed inward and the fish knife next to it facing the same way. Place the soup spoon on the end.

    3

Place the forks to the left of the plate in the correct order. The salad fork is first, the dinner fork next to it, and the fish fork at the end.

    4

Place the napkin next to the fish fork.

    5

Set the cake fork and dessert spoon above the service plate on the tabletop. Lay the fork on the table with the prongs to the right, and the dessert spoon above it with the curved end facing left.

    6

Place the bread plate to the left of the cake fork and dessert spoon. Lay the butter knife on top of the bread plate with the blade facing the left and the ridges downward.

    7

Place the glasses to the right of the cake fork and dessert spoon.

    8

Set the large water glass closest to the fork and spoon. Place the white wine glass next to the water glass, and the red wine glass on the end next to the white wine glass.
