How to Change a Cloth Nappy

How to Change a Cloth Nappy

Cloth nappies, the British term for diapers, are the less expensive, more environmentally friendly alternative to disposables. While many cloth diapers need to be folded prior to being placed on the baby, there are cloth options available with Velcro and snap closures, which rival the convenience of disposables. Don't forget to wash your hands after changing a cloth diaper, which is a relatively simple process.

Instructions

    1

Lay the baby down on a changing mat or strap her onto a changing table.

    2

Unfasten the diaper pin and set it aside or undo the Velcro or snap diaper closures.

    3

Hold the baby's feet together while lifting upwards. As you do this, remove the soiled diaper and set it aside.

    4

Clean the baby's genitals, buttocks and any other dirty areas, such as the folds on the thighs, gently using a baby wipe or wet washcloth. Be sure to wipe from front to back.

    5

Apply diaper-rash cream to the affected area, if necessary. Apply baby powder to the area as well, if desired.

    6

Lift the baby gently by the legs and lay a clean cloth diaper underneath him. If you are using a cloth diaper that requires a diaper pin, a simple way to fold it is to fold it in half once to make a triangle, which should be placed under the baby with the point facing down. Fold it into a small triangle is the baby is very young.

    7

Secure the diaper snugly by reattaching the snap or Velcro closures, or holding your hand in between the baby's skin and the cloth while you fasten the diaper pin.
