Making Furniture With Old Doors

Making Furniture With Old Doors

Projects

Repurposing a charming old door into furniture is both eco-friendly and economical. Old doors lend themselves beautifully to dining room tables, coffee tables or benches. Hall trees for your entryway or mud room made from an old door adds a whimsical touch to your home's dcor. Old metal exterior doors make water-resistant gardening stations or work tables for your craft room. If you're lucky enough to find an old wrought-iron gate, you can create a unique table with a sheet of glass and four legs or add it to the back of a bench for a French country seat.

Techniques

Old wooden doors can usually be cut down into smaller bits of wood for making almost anything. Sand the surface and refinish with paint or stain for a fresh look and you may not be able to tell your door is old.
Some people prefer to maintain the ambiance of an old door by leaving it as they found it, paint cracks and all.

Creating any kind of table from an old door is simply a matter of adding legs or a base for support and covering the top with glass or Plexiglas. Pre-made legs from a home improvement store, finished to match the table top or legs from another old piece of furniture, can be easily added with screws and a bit of wood glue. Remove the door knob and fill the hole with a piece of cut glass or wood that closely matches the door. If you know your door's history, fill the opening with a small plaque acknowledging that your great grandfather created it. Stand your old door upright, add a small bench and a few hooks or knobs and you've created a hall tree. Place a mirror in the panels and you have a more contemporary hall tree.

Resources

Finding old doors to use for making furniture is as easy as taking a trip to your local salvage yard, thrift store or antique shop. You may even have one or two stacked in your garage. Old doors with windows are excellent finds as they offer more versatility, even if the windows are broken. Planters and potting stations need tables with partial openings, so don't ignore an old door with broken glass. Finding old doors may become a habit, once you consider all of the ways you can easily create furniture for your home.
