How to Change a Diaper Without a Mess

Dirty diaper duty is not the most exciting parental task, or the most rewarding. It is, however, essential during about the first 2 years of your baby's life. As you fill soon find out, changing a wet diaper is much quicker and simpler than changing a poopy diaper. Thank goodness there are far more wet diapers than dirty diapers during any given day. Perhaps one of the most difficult aspects of a dirty diaper is keeping yourself, your baby, and your changing area clean when changing the diaper. Experienced mothers may know there is a way to virtually ensure a clean experience when changing a dirty diaper.

Instructions

    1

Place your baby on a washable, non-porous surface. Changing pads covered with vinyl or plastic work well. Never place your baby directly on the carpet or couch if she is poopy.

    2

Hang a mobile above your baby's changing table and give it a light tap right before you lay him down. Although this will not distract him forever, it will give you a few seconds of non-squirming.

    3

Remove at least 5 baby wipes from their container and lay them at your baby's feet. These need to be quickly accessible and you don't want to be fighting with the dispenser. Make sure, however, that you keep the wipes container lid open just in case you need more.

    4

Hand your baby her own wipe. If she tends to grab her diaper area with both hands, give her two wipes (one for each hand). This way, her hands will have something to do instead of grabbing poop. If she happens to get her hand down in the diaper area, at least she has a wipe in her hand as a barrier.

    5

Undo the sticky tabs that hold the diaper in place and bring down the front portion of the diaper. Quickly wipe the poop away from top to bottom. This will make it even more difficult for your baby to reach his poop if the amount on top is gone. Wipe up the remains with the diaper wipes.

    6

Place all the wipes into the dirty diaper and slide a clean diaper under her bottom. Quickly fold the diaper up around her waist and secure it in place with the sticky tabs.

    7

Roll up the dirty diaper and wipes together and secure it together with the diaper's sticky tabs. You now have a nice little dirty diaper pack that you can discard in the garbage or diaper pale.
