Ideas for Organizing a Baby Nursery

Ideas for Organizing a Baby Nursery

Creating a warm and inviting room is one of the most enjoyable parts of preparing for the arrival of a new baby. No matter how beautifully decorated the room is, however, it will not be a peaceful haven for you or your baby if it is not properly organized. Organize your baby's nursery so that it is safe for your baby and convenient for you.

Safety First

The most important part of organizing a baby nursery is making sure it is safe for the baby, especially when that baby learns to stand and walk. Place the crib away from windows and keep all cords (electrical and cords on blinds) high and out of reach of the baby. Choose furniture that has a low profile rather than tall, heavy pieces that can be pulled down onto a toddler. Place outlet covers on all outlets and heavy or age-inappropriate toys on out-of-reach shelves.

Double Duty

Many nurseries are small, so consider using furniture that does double duty. For example, instead of a changing table, lay a changing pad atop a long dresser. Fill the top two drawers of the dresser with diapers and other supplies and the other drawers with clothing. Set a hamper and diaper pail next to the changing area so you don't have to constantly carry dirty laundry or diapers in and out of the room.

In another area of the room, create a place where you can read to and feed your baby. A hollow, padded bench is not only a great place to sit and read with your baby, but you can also use it to store baby blankets, jackets or other items. Alternately, use a hollow ottoman with a rocker. Finally, consider purchasing a crib that can later be converted into a toddler bed. This will save you from having to purchase a new mattress and bed as your baby grows older.

Closets

Keep a baby's room clutter-free by using the closet to store toys and books. If you can afford it, install a closet system. If that is beyond your budget, consider simply sliding a bookshelf into the closet. Place baskets on the shelves and fill them with toys, books, diapers, and other baby items. Then close the closet doors to hide the clutter. This also allows you to rotate toys and books, keeping them fresh and new for your baby. Install a floating shelf near a rocking chair (or that padded bench) to keep favorite books on and perhaps a small, battery-powered lamp as well.
