The Items Needed for a Nursery

Having a child can be an exciting and scary time for new parents. There is so much to learn in the nine months that seem to fly by during pregnancy. Choosing the theme for the nursery and all the necessities that need to be purchased can seem like an arduous task. Every baby book available may give different suggestions as to what may be needed when the newborn arrives.

Crib and Bassinet

The most basic necessity for a nursery is the baby's first crib. There are many types of cribs to choose from. Some include a mattress for the baby to lie on; some require a separate mattress purchase. A purchase of a cradle or bassinet will also be beneficial.

Clothes

Prior to having your baby, stock three to six pairs of booties, six to eight snapping body suits, four to six rompers or pants and tops, six to eight sleepers, four to six bibs, two to four hats, one to three sweaters, one snowsuit, two pairs of mitts, and one outfit to take the child home from the hospital.

Diapers and Baby Wipes

Diapers are a necessity in any nursery. Two to four packages of diapers will do when you first bring your child home from the hospital. Purchase more as needed. Two to four packages of baby wipes are also needed for diaper changing. A diaper bag makes all of this easy to carry.

Changing Table and Pad

A changing table is needed for the preparation of a nursery. Pads can be purchased to place on the top of the changing table.

Crib and Bassinet Sheets

To prepare the crib and the bassinet, purchase sheets for both. Four to six sheets will do just fine for both pieces of furniture.

Baby Monitor

A baby monitor will help you make sure everything is okay in the newborn's room and whether or not the baby is crying or sleeping.

Bathing Items

A baby bathtub can be purchased to make cleaning the newborn a breeze. Sensitive shampoo and body wash should be purchased for bath time as well.

Mobile and Toys

A mobile is a great way to keep your newborn in a good mood. It hangs over the crib and serves as a distraction and entertainment for the baby. Also buy a few age-targeted toys for your newborn.
