Glass Coffee Table Dangers

Glass Coffee Table Dangers

Glass coffee tables can add a touch of class or sophistication to a room. However, these pieces of furniture may pose a danger to many homes, and, according to wpri.com, thousands of people are injured every year in connection with glass coffee tables. Knowing the danger is the first step toward avoiding injury. Does this Spark an idea?

Falling

The main danger of glass coffee tables, according to Dr. Mark Waltzman, is people falling through them. The glass used in these tables is similar to glass used in plates and cups, which means that this glass is prone to shatter on heavy impacts, and that when it breaks it maintains sharp edges that can cut and even impale people who are nearby. Though deaths rarely result from people falling through shattered glass tabletops, injuries are very common according to Waltzman.

Sudden Shattering

According to a CBS report, some types of glass coffee tables will suddenly shatter for no apparent reason. Because of the low industrial standards for the glass as it is manufactured, there might be flaws in the glass that are susceptible to environmental hazards and changes. Specifically, changes in temperature and pressure--or the combination of those two--are likely to cause the tables to shatter suddenly. Though this problem isn't common, it has been known to happen when manufacturers release an inferior batch of glass.

Weight Restrictions

Another danger of a glass coffee table is related to the amount of weight that you can place on it. If all you're putting on a glass coffee table is a few cups and a magazine, then there's no problem. If, on the other hand, you want to rest a heavy, iron statue on the table, or you want to rest your television set on it, then the glass might not be able to take the load. Even if the glass supports the weight at first, it might crack and break over time, resulting in the shards of glass that need to be cleaned up, and a dangerous situation all around.
