Alternatives to Changing Pads

Alternatives to Changing Pads

Changing pads can come in a variety of different shapes, sizes and colors. While they're convenient, you may not always have a diaper pad handy. Also, inexpensive changing pads tend to be coated with the plastic coating PVC. According to the website Innovations Report, some studies have linked the softening of PVC to asthma.

Baby Blanket

Baby blankets are a necessity when traveling around town with your baby. They have many uses such as keeping babies warm, covering their eyes from light and acting as a makeshift changing pad. Fold the blanket into four so the baby has a cushion while being changed. Since the diaper will be on top, the blanket should stay clean. If it becomes dirty, you can simply throw it in the wash.

Towel

Towels are also an option --- especially if you're a guest at a friend or family member's house. A hand towel or regular bath towel will do. Just spread the towel out over the service you wish to protect. Since they're absorbent and cover a large area, they make an effective alternative to changing pads.

Diaper

When you don't have any other options, you can use a diaper --- whether disposable or cloth --- as a last resort. Use a second diaper to cover the surface underneath your baby as well as cushion the area.
