Baby Furniture Components

Baby Furniture Components

Bringing a new baby into a home without any infant-specific furniture is both inconvenient and dangerous. In addition to appropriate bedding, other specialized furniture will make performing rudimentary tasks such as changing or playing with your baby delightfully simple and fun. As the arrival of your new child approaches, fill your home with these baby furniture staples.

Cradles and Bassinets

Sooth your baby to sleep with the gentle rocking motion provided by a cradle or bassinet. Cradles tend to resemble cribs, with an open top and a sturdy flat bottom. Bassinets are supportive baskets made of mesh or other cloth material. They resemble vintage strollers and come complete with a retractable canopy. Both pieces of furniture are easily transportable from room to room or even outside on a pleasant day. Though most arrive with bedding materials, purchase of additional blankets or mattresses may be necessary. Look for important safety features such as sturdy swing hinges and locking pins that prevent over-tilt when rocking.

Cribs

Cribs are an essential piece of baby furniture, as it is where newborn babies spend most of their time. There are various types of cribs including those with adjustable mattress bases and wheels and convertible models that can be transformed into a small toddler bed. When searching for a crib, safety and comfort should be your primary concern. Select a model that has corner posts that are the same height as the end support panels and with no more than 2 3/8 inches of space between side slats. When selecting a mattress, ensure that it fits snugly in the bottom of the crib--there should be no room for play between it and the side slats.

Changing Table

The task of cleaning and re-dressing your child is made much easier by a changing table. Most tables allow you to change your baby's diaper at a convenient height. Many models are also equipped with storage drawers or shelves beneath the table platform. This feature keeps diapers, baby wipes and other supplies within easy reach. When selecting a table, look for one with a sturdy guardrails surrounding the changing platform.

Highchair

Highchairs allow you to feed your baby from a comfortable and safe position. If your baby is not nursing, you can also feed them from the bottle in a chair. Highchairs are constructed from a variety of materials including wood, metal and hard plastic--which means that some chairs are more transportable than others. When selecting a highchair, purchase one with a sturdy "plate" or eating platform, a comfortable seat and a safety harness. Also ensure that any plastic used in the chair is certifiably non-toxic.
