How to Diaper a Toddler

How to Diaper a Toddler

Knowing how to entertain a toddler during diaper changing time is the difference between a successful diaper change and a potential disaster. Toddlers are active, so trying to keep one still while you wrestle with a wet or stinky diaper is challenging. Do not fret, however. There are ways to entertain or engage the toddler during diaper changing time. Keeping the diapering supplies nearby so you can move quickly and efficiently also helps.

Instructions

    1

Give the toddler a toy to entertain and distract him. Keep a small bag of diaper-changing-station-only toys near the table. These toys should be small so the toddler will be able to hold the toy up with his hands while he is lying on his back.

    2

Teach the toddler a song to sing while she is lying on the table during a diaper change. Choose a short song that you only sing during changing time. Over time, she will start to sing along. Nursery rhymes are also good, or make up your own song about diaper changing, incorporating your own lyrics into a familiar tune.

    3

Fasten a colorful poster to the ceiling above the changing station, giving the toddler something to look at while he is lying on his back. Posters of animals or children playing are good choices. While he is lying down, ask the toddler to tell you what he sees in the poster, make the noises of the animals in the picture or name what colors he sees.

    4

Stand the toddler up to change her if she is unwilling to lie down. Some toddlers will not lie down or will not stay down long enough. This method works well with diapers that are in underwear form.

    5

Talk with the toddler while changing his diaper. Ask him questions about his favorite colors, favorite foods and what he wants to do the rest of the day. By engaging him in conversation, you will help keep his mind off the diaper change.
