Oval Rug Problems Under a Table

An oval area rug can be great decoration for underneath a dining room or kitchen table, but there are some aspects of the rug that homeowners should take note of. Finding the correct size rug, slippery floors and braided rugs can prove to be problematic unless preparations are made. Does this Spark an idea?

Rug Size

Purchasing an oval rug that is the correct size for the table it sits under can be tricky because chairs must also figure into the equation. A four-legged table can be harder to fit than a pedestal table, because the legs must fit on the rug without slipping off the edges. Homeowners should also consider whether or not their table will be extended for entertaining. If so, they should purchase a rug that is slightly larger than needed for when the table is compact.

To find the correct size rug, set the table up as it would be for a typical seating arrangement. Pull the chairs away from the table about 1 foot to represent a person sitting there. Measure the distance between the back legs of facing chairs. The edge of the rug should be at least 6 inches beyond the back legs of the chairs on each side. A larger rug is acceptable if the room is large.

If the table is four-legged, measure the distance between legs, both width and height, and use that distance to make sure the narrow parts of the oval rug are wide enough.

Slippery Floor

Oval area rugs are popular on bare floors to add warmth to a room. The problem with a rug on bare floors like hardwood, is its tendency to slide around. If a table is quite heavy, like real wood pedestal tables, it is less likely to slide. Tables that are light weight can end up crooked or slid to one side of the room. Some oval rugs have bottoms that are slip proof, but the most common solution is to purchase slip-proof padding that can fit underneath the rug. To fit padding under a rug, make sure it is 6 inches to 1 foot smaller at the edges that the area rug. Another option is to purchase at least enough padding to fit beneath the table legs.

Braided Rug Breaks

Braided rugs are some of the most common oval area rugs on the market. They can work well under a table, but if the table area will be used heavily and often by a family with children, a braided rug may not hold up as well as other solid rugs. If a table is four-legged, the legs can cause breaks between the braided sections. Chair legs can also cause breaks.

Braided rug breaks do not happen immediately, so if a homeowner is looking to replace the rug within a few years, breaks may not be an issue. If the rug is expected to last more than four to five years, a braided oval rug might not last under a heavily-used table.
