How to Set a Classroom for Infants to Toddlers

Maintaining a classroom for both infants and toddlers requires that you organize the room to accommodate children with different abilities and needs. The room should include an area designated for small babies that contains cribs, baby swings and bouncy chairs and an area designated for toddlers that contains age-appropriate toys, books and crafts. A changing table should be placed in a common area. Designated areas enable you to run a successful and safe child care classroom for the children.

Use baby gates to section off and designate specific zones for the infants and the toddlers. Prevent the infants from exploring areas and toys that may not be safe for them. Use shelving units and rugs to create visual borders for various learning centers. For example, a rug might indicate a place where children will gather to listen to a story.

Arrange baby cribs, according to state regulations, in the infant area to provide a safe, relaxing place for infants to nap. Include in this area baby swings and bouncy chairs to help soothe the infants. Provide infants with toys that appeal to their sense of sight and sound.

Set up areas in the toddler section that will encourage creative and compassionate play. Designate areas for story time, art and free play with age-appropriate toys, such as dolls, blocks, balls and trucks. Include a low table for meal times and crafts.

Establish a changing station that faces the classroom to change and dispose of diapers. Place a changing table next to a lined garbage can. Organize the children's baby wipes, disposable diapers and baby wash clothes on the shelves of the changing table for easy access. Set sanitizing gel out of the children's reach to use after changing each child.
