Safety of Graco Portable Cribs

Safety of Graco Portable Cribs

Graco is one of the foremost manufacturers of portable cribs, or play yards. Graco is best known for the Pack n Play line of play yards, which have collapsible metal frames and folding mattresses for portability. Many models include special attachments like a bassinet and changing table. Graco has been manufacturing Pack 'n' Play play yards since 1987.

Brand Reputation

Graco play yards have an excellent overall track record. Graco play yards have been involved in only three product recalls since 1996, with the most recent being in 2003.

Raised Changing Table

The most recent recall, in 2003, related to the changing table attachment included with some Pack n Play models. The changing table can pose a strangulation risk for older babies and was implicated in one death. Graco created new labels and instructions informing parents that the changing table attachment should be removed once the child outgrows the bassinet attachment and uses the lower floor of the play yard.

Protruding Rivets

Graco play yards were included in a 1998 recall due to protruding rivets that posed a strangulation risk. Protruding rivets were implicated in eight toddler strangulation deaths since 1983. Newer play yards have been designed to eliminate this risk.

Unraveling Mesh

Graco play yards were recalled in 1996 due to fabric mesh that could unravel at the seams, posing a strangulation risk. No serious injuries were reported. Although newer play yards have been redesigned to eliminate this risk, parents should always ensure that the fabric and mesh is in good repair prior to use.

Collapsible Rails

Millions of play yard products by brands such as Kolcraft and Fisher-Price have been recalled due to failure of the hinge mechanism on the collapsible rails. Sudden collapse of the crib rails can cause injury or death from strangulation or a fall. Graco play yards have never been recalled for this reason, but parents should always check to ensure that their play yard is properly assembled and has no broken parts.

Precautions

As with any baby product, always make sure that your play yard is in good condition with no broken or missing parts, loose threads or torn fabric. It is safest to buy a new play yard if possible to ensure that the product meets the latest safety standards and has not been recalled. Follow all manufacturers instructions for assembly and use, including age and weight guidelines. Be sure to register your product with the manufacturer and monitor the news or the Consumer Product Safety Commission website (http://www.cpsc.gov) for current recall information.
