Measure the frame of the broken table top to determine the exact size of glass needed to fit within the frame edges. It should be within one-eighth inch of each edge so that the glass will rest on the frame all around. If there is no frame and the glass sits on the legs, approximate the size of the broken glass and figure out the best fit by reviewing standard table top sizes available from the glass shop. Ordering a standard size will help reduce costs.

Determine the exact shape the glass should be to fit the frame. Standard shapes are rectangular, oval, round or square. If the table top is an odd shape, it may be best to trace the pattern on a piece of paper to be given to the glass shop to duplicate.

Measure the exact placement of any holes that may have been in the glass to fit an umbrella into the table top. This will need to be cut into the glass before it is tempered.

Decide the manner in which you would like the edge to be finished. This can be beveled, seamed, flat or rounded and can have textures, such as wavy, glossy, polished or satin.
