What Is a Buffet Table?

What Is a Buffet Table?

Buffets were invented in the 19th century when banquets evolved to a dinner party with food served on a sideboard. Guests served themsevles from the sideboard, selecting their meal and plating it themselves. The modern buffet is an entertaining solution for casual dining events, especially those that focus on larger numbers of people. Buffets can also be themed, such as a Chinese or Indian buffet, or even a buffet of sweets only. Does this Spark an idea?

Usage

A buffet table is a long table used for serving an assortment of food. This type of table is used in restaurants, reception halls, pubs and bars as well as in private homes. An assortment of dishes are set-up on the table and each guest plates his own food. Larger buffets may require several tables. Chairs are not pushed into the buffet table; guests enjoy their meal at individual tables with chairs. The buffet table needs space for food service. Larger buffets often require food service from both sides of the table.

Maintenance and Storage

A buffet table typically has legs that folde under the table, enabling easy storage. Thoroughly clean a buffet table before using it, especially if the table has been stored in a dusty storage room. Spray on a heavy duty cleaner and wipe dry. Investing in a table storage bag, available in heavy plastic or canvas, prevents layers of dust from collecting on your food service table and also reduces the change your table will be damaged in storage. Wipe your table down after your special buffet-style event and place in its storage bag.

Decor

Buffet tables are very plain. Cover yours with a crisp white table cloth or a favorite colored table cloth. Incorporate a banner, toasting the occasion, across the front of the buffet table. Add a vase of fresh flowers. Store cutlery in glass containers, adorned with decorative ribbon, or in wooden boxes. Weave food into the decor by making a fruit and vegetable centerpiece. Shape a large fruit, like a watermelon, into a punch bowl.

Dishes

Dishes you find on many buffet tables include salads, soup, meatballs, casseroles, meat and fish dishes and desserts such as trifle and cake. Offer vegetarian alternatives. Making name plates for each individual dish is a necessity: guests with allergies will need to know what they are about to eat before consuming. Organize your food: have separate sections for appetizers, main courses and desserts. Keep hot and cold dishes separate. Reduce buffet lines by having your drink station on an individual table.
