How to Update an Oak Pedestal Table Chair

How to Update an Oak Pedestal Table Chair

Pedestal tables were first used during the 18th and 19th centuries. These original designs featured a round or oval tabletop placed on a thick pedestal base made from a thick centerpiece that was turned on a lathe with heavy decorative legs at the base. The chairs that accompanied the tables were plain by comparison, with basic lines. Modern tables are often designed after these early furniture pieces. You can update the chairs, painting in an accent color. Another option that will effectively showcase the quality of an oak pedestal table chair is to use stain. A dark one will give the chair a modern feel. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Paint an Accent Color

    1

Sand the entire surface of the chair with fine-grit sandpaper in the same direction as the wood grain. Sand until the surface appears dull. This will provide a slightly rough surface to allow the primer to properly adhere.

    2

Wipe off the dust from sanding with a tack cloth.

    3

Apply an even coat of primer onto the chair with a paintbrush. Allow the primer to dry at least four hours.

    4

Brush on two light coats of paint. Allow the paint to dry at least four hours between coats. Allow the paint to dry for at least 72 hours after the final coat before use.

Stain a Dark Color

    5

Sand the entire surface of the chair with medium-grit sandpaper until you have removed the glossy finish.

    6

Remove the wood finish completely with a progression of medium- to fine-grit sandpaper.

    7

Brush on an even coat of dark pigmented stain with a stain brush. Allow the stain to dry for 72 hours.

    8

Rub a finishing wax over the entire chair to complete the finish using a clean cloth rag. Buff the surface in gentle circles once you have applied the wax until you are satisfied with the sheen. The dark finish will give the oak chair a contemporary and refined look.
