Creative Ways to Cover a Table

Setting the table does not need to be boring. With some creativity and the inspiration from good ideas, create a table covering that is entertaining, exotic and even fun for the kids. Creating unique and expressive table coverings could become a regular family project, or they may be a fun thing you can use to keep the kids occupied on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Does this Spark an idea?

A Clubhouse

When you look at your table you may only see a table, but there is a good chance that your kids see a clubhouse. Find a dark table cloth that covers the entire table on all sides, and then begin using your imagination to bring the clubhouse to life. Make It And Love It, listed below, is a website that offers some very creative ideas on clubhouse table coverings. Start by cutting a door and a window in your clubhouse, then continue by adding window trimmings and a variety of other designs.

It does not have to stop at a clubhouse. Use a red tablecloth and make a fire station. A green tablecloth can become an Army tent. Get a black tablecloth and create a dark cave. Expand on the clubhouse idea to create a world under the table.

Make Dinner Interesting

CBS News suggests some placesettings that would make any table interesting. Cut an old chalkboard or whiteboard into multiple rectangular pieces and use them as placesettings for the table. While everyone is waiting for dinner, they have something to draw on.

Use fresh fruit to accent your table when guests are over for dinner. Get a large clear bowl, fill it with water and apples and you have an apple-dunking contest as a centerpiece. Use various size containers but stick with the same color apples to create a theme. It does not always need to be apples. Use a clear vase filled with bananas as a centerpiece, or perhaps you could melt chocolate into a bowl and float strawberries in it as an appetizer. Unique place settings and centerpieces can make dinner more interesting for everyone.

Creative Materials

Consider using floor coverings as creative accents to your tables. Studio Well Spring suggests that some of the more exotic-looking floor coverings can also make interesting table coverings. Vinyl floor sections designed to look like expensive marble or stone can make effective tabletops. Use floor tiles made of stone attached to a mesh backing to make your table look as though it were covered in sparkling white pebbles. The next time you are walking through the flooring section of a home improvement store, start thinking about covering your tables as well.
