How to Convert Metric Units to Ounces

How to Convert Metric Units to Ounces

The metric system and the USA system of measurement are not closely linked; a yard and a meter are not exactly the same length, for example. This also applies to measures of volume and weight. Ounces can be particularly tricky when you are doing conversions from the metric system. Fluid ounces measure volume, while ounces measure weight. If your metric units are grams, kilograms or tonnes, they convert to ounces. If they are in liters or milliliters, however, they convert to fluid ounces.

Instructions

    1

Divide the number of grams by 28.35 to obtain the number of ounces. If you had something weighing 87 g, for example, you would divide 87 by 28.35 for a total of 3.0688 oz.

    2

Divide the number of kilograms by 0.02835 to obtain the number of ounces. If you had something weighing 35 kg, for example, you would divide 35 by 0.02835 for a total of 1,234.5679 oz.

    3

Multiply the number of liters by 33.8 to determine the number of fluid ounces. If you had something measuring 3 liters, for example, you would multiply 3 by 33.8 for a total of 101.4 fl. oz.

    4

Multiply the number of milliliters by .0338 to determine the number of fluid ounces. If you had something measuring 30 ml, for example, you would multiply 30 by .0338 for a total of 1.014 fl. oz.
