How to Change Nappies in Childcare

Changing nappies, more commonly known in the United States as diapers, requires special care in the childcare setting. Improper handling of soiled articles or poor sanitary conditions can result in the spread of harmful bacteria or parasites that can infect staff and other children. By following safe changing guidelines, daycare workers can provide a safer environment for all individuals. Check nappies regularly and change them as soon after soiling as possible, as often as is necessary.

Line a clean changing table with a disposable paper changing liner. Put on disposable latex or rubber gloves.

Take all items needed for the change--such as baby wipes, a clean nappy, extra clothing, plastic bags and rash creams--out and place them within easy reach.

Lay the child on the changing table. Remove the child's clothing and check to see if the items have been soiled. If not, set them aside. If they are soiled, place them in a plastic bag.

Remove the soiled nappy and place it into a diaper pail, or out of the child's reach. Wipe the child clean with disposable baby wipes, and discard them in the diaper pail, or on top of the nappy. Remove the gloves and dispose of them in the diaper pail or on top of the nappy.

Apply rash cream, if necessary. Put on a fresh nappy and dress the child. Set the child down in a safe place.

Dispose of the paper liner. If the nappy, wipes and gloves were not placed in a diaper pail, put them onto the paper liner and roll it up into a bundle, then dispose of it.

Sanitize the changing area. Spray it with a solution of one part bleach to 10 parts water and wipe it clean. Allow it to air dry.

Wash your hands immediately in warm, soapy water, rubbing soapy hands together for 20 to 30 seconds before rinsing and drying.
