How to Drape a Buffet Table

With imaginative dcor, you can transform a school cafeteria or a hotel conference room into an inviting space. If you're hosting a meal, create a buffet table that will be the centerpiece of your event. Use any shape of a table, and in any condition. The linens and accessories will obscure any imperfections and make the table an eye-catcher. You can use tablecloth plus a skirt for a fuller look.

Instructions

    1

Add your table skirt around the perimeter of the table. Follow the instructions on the package for adhering.

    2

Place your Styrofoam blocks on top of the table. The Styrofoam is a tool to help you add height contrast on the table. Be sure to use blocks that are at least two inches high and wide enough to hold the dish you'll eventually place on top of it. If you're placing a round platter on top of it, use a round block. Buy these materials at Michael's or another arts-and-crafts store. Space the blocks apart by several inches to allow room for the dishes you will set between them.

    3

Lay your tablecloth over the blocks and onto the table. Hold the blocks steady as you place the linen. Make sure the cloth is centered on the table but lay it flat with no creases over the blocks. Create creases in the tablecloth in between and around the blocks; these creases should resemble waves. While it's safe for you to set food platters on top of the creases, set your chafers, which require heat, on top of the blocks where the cloth is flat. Spread the outer edges of the tablecloth so they drape over the top part of the skirt. Adjust the cloth by pulling it up in certain sections to enhance the wavy appearance.

    4

Hang other items from your table skirt such as ribbons and bows for additional accent. Use pins to attach these items. Your table is now ready to add platters, chafers and floral centerpieces.
