Table Decorating at Wedding Receptions

The centerpieces for your reception tables are an integral part of the overall style statement you want your wedding to make. When your guests enter the reception room, one look at the tables should set the expectations and mood for your event. While your individual personality should play a big part in designing the centerpieces, there are a few things to keep in mind to make sure your efforts strike the right note.

Proportion

Let the size of the tables determine the maximum size of your centerpiece. A small table can't carry a big centerpiece without looking like an accent table, nor can it handle a very tall one. Match the size of your arrangement so that it complements the size of the table and forms a pleasing dynamic. The lower the piece, the broader it can be, while a narrow one can be taller.

Functionality

Dramatic centerpieces can have a great effect on a table, but can cause problems during the reception. A centerpiece should never be so tall that it does not allow guests to see each other and talk to each other across a table. Nor should it be so narrow or top heavy that it is at risk of falling over and ruining someone's dinner or outfit. An overly broad centerpiece could get in the way of a proper table arrangement. You don't want your beautiful arrangement to end up on the floor, so make sure it is as functional as it is beautiful.

Variety

There is no rule that says arrangements have to all match each other. Especially in a big room with a lot of tables, variety brings freshness to the overall presentation and draws attention back to the tables. A unifying theme throughout the room, such as different flowers and materials using the same color scheme, or the same arrangement repeated in different, but complementary colors, helps create flow without being boring. The trick is to change just enough for visual impact, but not to make the centerpieces so different from each other that the overall effect becomes clunky.

Non-traditional Materials

Flowers are the gold standard for wedding centerpieces, but they are not your only option. You can use all types of materials to create a beautiful one-of-a-kind table setting. Fruit, candles, branches, ribbon, glassware, sculpture and natural elements can be combined to form a statement that is a unique expression of your style. Consider using an item that has a personal and symbolic meaning for you and your fianc, telling a simple story of how you met, what drew you together, or common interests that you share. You might even be able to enlist his help in designing the centerpiece with you.

Use these ideas to successfully bring your vision to life and create the impact you want.
