How to Convert Grams to Ounces in Cooking

How to Convert Grams to Ounces in Cooking

With the rise of the Internet and food blogging, more Americans are being exposed to recipes from other countries. While this is a good thing, it's sometimes necessary to make adjustments. American recipes most often use volume measurements such as cups and pints. Recipes from other countries are almost always by weight and are generally in metric. It's worth investing in a scale that has both metric and standard units if you're often in the kitchen. However, converting to and from metric can be easily done. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

    1

Divide the number of grams by 30 to arrive at the approximate number of ounces for cooking purposes. This is not an exact conversion but it is close enough for most recipes and the calculation is easy enough to be done mentally.

    2

Divide the number of grams by 28.4 to arrive at an exact conversion for baking. Baking is often more exacting than cooking and requires greater precision in measurement.

    3

Use a pocket calculator to make the conversion. Any calculator will work if you have a table of conversions to work from. Metric conversion calculators are readily available at electronics stores and will quickly convert units of measure.

    4

Use an online calculator to make the conversion. Calculators are available online to convert any standard kitchen measurement between metric and standard units. Many of them provide useful additional information, including the difference in volume measurements between America, the UK and Commonwealth countries such as Australia and Canada. These details can also affect the success or failure of a recipe.

    5

Don't convert the recipe at all. Most kitchen scales will measure in grams or ounces. It's often best to simply use your scale's metric setting and make the recipe as directed. Although the units will be unfamiliar, the ingredients will be in the same relative proportions. This is often the easier alternative.
