How to Convert ASVAB Scores

The ASVAB, or Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, is necessary for any man or woman that is considering the military as an option. Though the test itself has a score, the ultimate score needs to be converted so the military can decide what areas are best for the individual and how trainable the new recruit is. The percentile scores must be above 31, but it is important to know how to convert the raw scores of the ASVAB to the percentile scores.

Add the raw scores of the paragraph comprehension and word knowledge scores. These raw scores added together form the verbal ability score. Once this number is found, look at the conversion table supplied with the test version. The ASVAB is sometimes altered, so the conversion table should be the one used for the specific test found with military recruiters.

Multiply the verbal ability score by two. The ultimate score is found after the original verbal ability score is found.

Add the raw arithmetic reasoning score, the raw mathematics knowledge score and the doubled verbal ability scores.

Using the final number in the raw scores, match the number to a second conversion chart. The final number on the chart is the percentile. Armed services require a minimum of 31, though the higher the score, the better it is. Some armed services, like the Navy, require slightly higher scores. The second conversion chart should be with the military recruiter that gave the test.
