Room Layout Ideas

Room Layout Ideas

The layout of furniture in a room will define how it is used and where the eye is drawn when guests enter. A well-designed room can make the difference between a cluttered, confusing space and a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere. Rooms should be laid out in a way that is both functional and attractive for the best results. Does this Spark an idea?

Small Conversation Areas

Instead of pushing all the seating against the walls around the perimeter of a room, focus on bringing the pieces together to create one or two small gathering spaces. A pair of upholstered chairs turned toward each other in the corner, sharing an end table, creates an ideal spot for quiet conversation. A U-shaped arrangement with the couch creating the long interior side of the shape and two chairs or love seats facing each other on either side is conducive to larger gatherings. Pull furniture away from the walls and cluster seating together. Use floor rugs to help define the various conversation areas in the room.

Multi-Purpose Focal Point

A well-designed room should have a noticeable focal point that anchors the space. In many homes, this is the television by default, simply because this feature is one of the largest in the room. Take the focus away from the television by arranging for an entertainment center that has doors that close over the television. Or mount the television above the fireplace to draw the focus downward to the hearth when you'd prefer conversation to zoning out TV. A built-in entertainment center or shelf for the television may even be able to hide the TV completely. Simply draw down a panel that matches the surrounding walls over the TV. Place an eye-catching painting on the panel to cover the television with a piece of artwork for the focal point.

Well-Equipped Work Spaces

Arrange each room in the house for function as well as fashion to create a home that is conducive to performing everyday tasks. Think about where you perform certain activities and arrange your furniture accordingly. Place an antique secretary near the front door for a handy place to keep bills and mail organized as soon as it comes into the house. Place shelving for DVDs beside the television. Keep bookshelves next to plush seating and task lighting that is perfect for reading. If you serve buffet style meals often, place a buffet in the dining room beside the table and arrange the furniture so there is plenty of room to fill plates without stumbling over chairs and table legs.
